Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev and European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen discussed ways to ensure sustainable investment in technology and innovation as drivers of European development and growth, in the context of negotiations on the European Union’s new Multiannual Financial Framework, the government’s information service said on Tuesday.
The meeting was held at the Council of Ministers and attended by Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov and Minister of Innovation and Digital Transformation Ivan Vasilev.
“The competitiveness of every Member State and of the EU itself requires investment in high technology and innovation, as well as ensuring our security,” Radev said, as quoted by the government press service. He said Bulgaria’s efforts to invest in establishing and maintaining domestic IT ecosystems and developing AI factories were in line with the country’s ambition to make up for lost ground in these areas in recent years.
The talks also addressed opportunities to support the development of small technology companies in Europe and strengthen their competitiveness. Radev said that, after years of neglect, interest in engineering disciplines was growing again in Bulgaria, along with efforts to train specialists in the AI sector, the Council of Ministers said.
The PM stressed that advances in high technology and space research required not only financial investment but also the training of skilled professionals. He added that young Bulgarians continued to demonstrate their abilities each year by winning top places in mathematics, physics and astronomy Olympiads.
During the meeting, Radev briefed Virkkunen on the investigation into the attack on two merchant vessels struck by drones in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. He emphasized the need for technical assistance from specialised EU bodies, particularly for the deep-sea examination of the sunken vessel, to establish all the facts and search for debris from the drones used in the attack.
Earlier on Tuesday, the government press service said that Radev had sent letters to European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, requesting technical assistance from the EU and NATO to continue the investigation into the attack on the merchant vessels in the Black Sea.
