Balgarianovinite.com As he addressed an observance of the 205th anniversary of the founding of the Ukrainian city of Bolhrad on Tuesday, Bulgaria’s Consul General in Odesa, Svetoslav Ivanov, said that it is, for Bulgarians, the capital of Bessarabia and a link to the deep roots of Bulgarian spirituality and the ancestral homeland.
Ivanov also congratulated those attending the celebrations on Ukraine’s Independence Day, marked on August 24, when the country commemorated 35 years of independence.
“Today, Bolhrad celebrates 205 years since it was founded by Bulgarian settlers on the site of the old settlement of Tabaki in 1821,” he said. He noted that the celebrations come after years of war and are an example of supporting the spirit of the city’s residents and strengthening their ties with Bulgaria. “Over time, the Bulgarian colonists, the ancestors of today’s community, transformed Bolhrad through hard work and many hardships into an important administrative and cultural centre, he added.
The residents of Bolhrad are a bridge of friendship in bilateral relations between Ukraine and Bulgaria, Ivanov said. He reaffirmed Bulgaria’s support for Ukraine’s European orientation within its internationally recognized borders and thanked the local authorities for respecting the rights of the Bulgarian national minority during the war, including the rights to community, cultural and educational activities, to preserve traditions and customs and to use the Bulgarian language.
Bulgaria has continued supporting Bulgarian Sunday schools. A total of 48 such schools have been approved for the 2026/2027 school year, including 45 in Odesa Region, while 698 students were admitted to Bulgarian state universities during this summer’s application campaign, nearly 200 more than last year.
Ivanov conveyed congratulations from Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova and wished Bolhrad’s residents to carry the Bulgarian spirit proudly in their hearts and remain worthy heirs to their ancestral homeland. “I wish you to succeed in preserving your Bulgarian national identity and the Bulgarian language in the years ahead,” he said.
