Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian dance club BG Folk Ritmi from Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmo, Sweden, will present Rhodope, Thracian, Shoppe folklore at the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival, which will take place in Munich from May 15 to 17.
The club will present a programme, featuring songs and dances from Bulgaria’s Rhodope, Thracian and Shopluk folklore regions, together with traditional costumes characteristic of each region, the group’s leaders Nikolay Stoyanov and Panka Stoyanova told BTA.
The performance will also be presented at the final stage of the Seventh National Review of Folklore Ensembles of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts – Bulgaria, for which the group qualified after participating in the Festival of Bulgarian Folklore Ensembles Abroad in Veliko Tarnovo in 2025.
The choreography and staging of the programme are by Nikolay Stoyanov and Panka Stoyanova. The musical accompaniment includes performances by the Ovcharska Pesen authentic folklore ensemble from Dorkovo, the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra and Choir, and the Pirin Ensemble from Blagoevgrad.
The group leaders said they hoped Bulgarian folklore groups abroad would continue preserving, developing and promoting Bulgarian folklore in its most authentic form.
Preparations for the Munich festival are taking place simultaneously in Denmark and Sweden, as the club includes dancers from both countries.
The dancers in BG Folk Ritmi are aged between 13 and over 60. The ensemble also includes members from North Macedonia, Montenegro and Germany.
The group leaders noted that BG Folk Ritmi was established in Copenhagen in 2014, while a second group was later formed in Malmo. Since 2018, the two ensembles have performed together under the name BG Folk Ritmi Copenhagen and Malmo.
Over the years, the group has represented Bulgarian folklore at events in Denmark, Sweden and a number of countries across Europe and the Middle East, including the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkiye, Czechia and the United Arab Emirates.
The travelling festival Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance is organized by and for amateur folklore ensembles performing outside Bulgaria. The initiative was launched by the Ot Izvora group in Lyon, France, which hosted both the first edition in 2015 and the tenth edition in 2025. More than 100 dance ensembles and over 4,000 guests are expected at the 11th edition in Munich in May. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) is the official media partner of the event and will present all participants.
