Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has eliminated four outbreaks of sheep and goat pox in the southern region of Plovdiv, and the affected farms have been disinfected, the Agency reported here on Saturday.
The infection dates back to the summer of last year but had not been eradicated until now, the Agency added. There are still 12 older outbreaks of the disease in the region that remain under quarantine restrictions.
According to the statement, livestock owners are refusing to comply with the law and are not allowing BFSA inspectors access to their barns. A similar situation exists with the flock in Velingrad (South Bulgaria) where plague has been confirmed. Further actions are planned to eliminate those outbreaks as well.
Because of these cases, the movement of animals, the restocking of farms, and the trade in live animals from Plovdiv and Pazardzhik regions, as well as from certain settlements bordering those regions, have been banned.
The BFSA also said that there is currently no avian influenza in Bulgaria. Since the beginning of 2026, 10 outbreaks of the disease have been detected, all of which have been eliminated. Susceptible animals were culled, farms disinfected, and surveillance carried out within three- and ten-kilometre zones around the affected sites.
An anthrax outbreak at a buffalo farm in the village of Chernogor in the Silistra region (Northeast Bulgaria) has also been brought under control. All cattle in the village have been vaccinated, the farm has been repeatedly disinfected, and constant monitoring is underway. All animal movements have been traced and all products obtained from the animals have been destroyed. After the legally required one-month quarantine period expires, the farm in Chernogor will be released from all restrictions. According to the agency, there are no other anthrax outbreaks in the country.
Two outbreaks of bovine brucellosis – in Veliko Tarnovo and Simitli, have also been eliminated. Work is continuing actively on another 11 outbreaks in Simitli Municipality, most of them dating back to last year. The affected facilities remain under quarantine, and animals are tested every three months. When all samples from a given farm test negative, the next examination is conducted after six months. If all cattle are healthy at that point as well, the outbreak is declared over.
The BFSA added that measures against older cases of Q fever are continuing. The disease has a prolonged course and requires vaccination of entire herds for at least three years. All necessary measures have been taken to restrict the movement of animals from affected farms.
