Balgarianovinite.com Regional Development and Public Works Minister Ivan Shishkov said on Friday that the government had identified a package of short- and medium-term measures aimed at minimizing, or entirely avoiding, water restrictions in the cities of Pleven and Lovech during the current year. Speaking to journalists in Sofia after a working meeting at the Council of Ministers dedicated to water shortages, water supply infrastructure, and irrigation systems, Shishkov said the government was launching an intensive campaign to reduce the impact of potential water rationing in the two cities.
He voiced hope that, even if water restrictions proved unavoidable, they would be kept to a minimum, adding that the authorities were optimistic that no water rationing would be necessary at all.
According to the Minister, the action plan agreed at the meeting, together with the government’s decisive response, should allow residents of Pleven and Lovech to experience a substantially different summer compared with previous years. He said he was confident the planned measures would achieve that goal.
Asked whether other parts of the country were also facing a potential water crisis, Shishkov said a comprehensive nationwide assessment was currently underway. He said that the government was holding a series of meetings to identify all areas at risk and assess potential problem zones.
According to data compiled by Bulgaria’s regional water and sewerage operators for the period June 15-21, 13 municipalities are currently under water supply restrictions, affecting a total of 14,976 residents.
At end-May, Plamen Nikiforov, Chair of the Management Board of the Scientific and Technical Union of Water Management, said Bulgaria’s water shortages were not solely the result of climate change, but also stemmed from poor management, aging infrastructure, and a lack of institutional coordination.
