Balgarianovinite.com For too long, Bulgarian literature remained in the shadows, but it is now on the rise, Bulgarian Book Association Deputy Chair Gergana Dimitrova told the Bulgarian News Agency on Monday. She discussed Bulgaria’s forthcoming participation at the 22nd Thessaloniki International Book Fair on May 7-10. This country will be the guest of honour at the event.
According to Dimitrova, the international success of Georgi Gospodinov has done the most to promote Bulgarian literature and has made it possible for Rene Karabash to receive the attention she deserves for the Booker Prize. “At the same time, what is perhaps most important is that a Bulgarian agency has emerged to handle the connection between Bulgarian writers and foreign publishers. It is called Sofia Literary Agency and is run by Gergana Pancheva, who is doing wonders for Bulgarian literature,” Dimitrova added.
In her view, this rise is not limited to recent years or to the work of Georgi Gospodinov, but is also due to the wide diversity of styles and distinct Bulgarian characteristics in literature, some of which have yet to be presented abroad. “I think this process has already gathered enough momentum and that increasingly positive developments lie ahead for Bulgarian literature,” Dimitrova added.

She explained that a broad range of authors and translators will be presented at the Fair.
Kapka Kaneva and Zornitsa Hristova are the children’s authors who will take part in the forum in the Greek city. Also to be presented are Rene Karabash, shortlisted for the International Booker Prize, Alexandar Sekulov, Iana Boukova, Theodora Dimova, Todor Todorov and Ina Valchanova, Elena Alexieva, Yordanka Beleva, Sotir Gelev, Penko Gelev, and Leonie Hodvevitch.
The translators taking part are Zdravka Mihaylova, Blagorodna Filevska-Panagu and Spiros Pappas.
Dimitrova noted that almost all of the authors have books published in Greece. “There is considerable diversity, including works unfamiliar to Greek readers as well as those already known to them,” she said.
“What we have chosen as a slogan for Bulgaria’s participation as the focus country at the fair in Greece is Literature Without Borders. In the Balkans, it is easy to exchange literature, and this is exactly what we want to show,” Dimitrova said. According to her, many Greek authors have been published in Bulgaria, and more recently Bulgarian writers have also been published in Greece.
“Bulgaria’s participation in this forum will help even more Bulgarian authors to be published in Greece,” she said.
She noted that Bulgaria’s participation in will close with a concert by pianist Svetlin Roussev and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra on May 10 at the Church of Agios Georgios (Rotunda). The programme will include music by Pancho Wladigeroff, Nikos Skalkottas and Camille Saint-Saens.
