The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) is putting into circulation a gold collector’s coin dedicated to St John of Rila as of Monday, the central bank announced. The coin, which is part of the Bulgarian Iconography series, has a face value of EUR 100 and will be sold at a price of EUR 1,508 at issue. The mintage is 3,000 pieces. It is made of gold, 999/1000 fineness, weighs 8.64 grams, has a diameter of 24 mm.
The obverse features the following elements: in the centre, the emblem of the Bulgarian National Bank with the year “1879” on the ribbon; below it, the face value “100 EURO” and the year of issue “2026”. The reverse of the coin depicts St John of Rila; around the upper edge is the inscription “ST JOHN OF RILA”. The author of the artistic design is Simeon Tsintsarski.
The coin will be sold by the BNB at four cash desks in the central building of the BNB in Sofia, 1 Knyaz Alexander I Square, and at four cash desks in the BNB Cash Center in Sofia, 10 Mihail Tenev Street. Each client will be able to purchase only 1 coin from the BNB cash desks, regardless of whether they purchase in their own name and for their own account or in the name and for the account of another person.
By the end of the working day, the new coin will be made available by the Bulgarian National Bank to Investbank, First Investment Bank, Texim Bank, Tokuda Bank, Municipal Bank and Central Cooperative Bank for sale at their offices and branches, as well as at the Bulgarian Mint.
Born around 876 in the village of Skrino, in the Osogovo Mountains, St John of Rila the Wonderworker is venerated in the Bulgarian Orthodox tradition as a spiritual father, mentor and heavenly protector of the Bulgarian people, according to the information leaflet for the coin.
The gold coin is the fifth and final collector’s coin to be issued by BNB this year. Collector’s euro coins are not legal tender in the euro area, but only in the issuing country.
