Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) Director General Milen Mitev said love is needed in education and the media to achieve good results. He was speaking from the stage of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre on Saturday, where nine new school hymns created under the Svetilnik (Candlelight) initiative, organized by Musicautor, were presented.
A flash mob featuring students and the Bulgarian National Radio Children’s Choir preceded the concert.
Mitev presented a Musicautor certificate for a donated hymn to the 11th Hristo Botev School of Blagoevgrad (Southwestern Bulgaria). The certificate was accepted by the school’s principal, Radka Rizova.
Mitev said: “Svetilnik is a very powerful name. Light has always been associated with goodness, creative power and the pursuit of development and improvement. It is no coincidence that the opening words of the Bible are: ‘Let there be light’. Many people believe that for there to be light, there must also be darkness, because otherwise we cannot recognize and appreciate the light. In fact, however, for there to be light, something else is needed as well – someone to hold the lantern high. Today, in the beautiful hall of the National Theatre, there are many such bearers of light: teachers, musicians, artists, but above all children.”
“American philosopher Allan Bloom says that education is the movement from darkness to light. I would add that the school is the guide that shows us the path to the light, because the role of the school is far greater than simply providing knowledge. The school is one of the first communities that children become part of. It is one of the first communities in which young people form their character and develop as individuals, while one of the fundamental functions of hymns is to build a sense of community. That is why I believe that the significance of the Svetilnik initiative goes far beyond the atmosphere of the celebrations at which these hymns will be performed,” the BNR Director General added.
Since its launch in 2021, the Svetilnik initiative has brought together more than 31,000 students and nearly 2,300 teachers from 20 settlements through music, creativity and shared values. It has also involved more than 190 authors and five graduating classes from the Faculty of Screen Arts of the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA), which participated in producing the videos accompanying the hymns.
BTA has been a media partner of the initiative since its inception in 2021. The project is supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Bulgarian National Television (BNT), the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA), the Ivan Vazov National Theatre and Sofia Municipality.
