Bulgarian News Agency Building Illuminated in National Tricolour for National Day 2026

Balgarianovinite.com On the occasion of Bulgaria’s National Day, the facade of Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) was illuminated in the colours of the Bulgarian tricolour on Monday. The facade will remain lit in white, green and red on Tuesday evening as well. On March 3, Bulgaria will mark 148 years since its Liberation from Ottoman rule.
Liberation Day of Bulgaria
On March 3, 1878 (old style February 19, 1878), the Act of the Preliminaries of Peace was signed in San Stefano (a village on the western outskirts of Constantinople, now Istanbul’s neighbourhood of Yesilkoy) by the Russian and Ottoman Empires, ending the 1877-1879 Russo-Turkish War and constituting Bulgaria “an autonomous tributary Principality” after 482 years of Ottoman rule in the Bulgarian lands. The Act was signed by Count Nicolai Ignatieff and Aleksandr Nelidov for Russia and Foreign Minister Mehmed Safvet Pasha and the ambassador to Germany, Sabulah Bey, for the Ottoman Empire. This international act established, though not definitively, the borders of the future Third Bulgarian State.
Bulgaria’s Liberation Day was first observed on February 19, 1880. By an order of January 9, 1880, issued by Prince Alexander I, acting on a proposal by the Minister of War, Gen. Pyotr Parensov and a Council of Ministers’ decree, February 19 was officially listed as “The Accession to the Throne of the Emperor Alexander II and the Conclusion of the Treaty of San Stefano.”
On December 31, 1887, Prince Ferdinand ordered that February 19 will start to be celebrated as the “Liberation Day of Bulgaria” in 1888.
BTA’s lights
At the beginning of 2025, BTA modernized its building, renovated and illuminated its facade, and ensured accessible access for people with disabilities to the National Press Club and the MaxiM Hall. The renovation was carried out with funding under the Beautiful Bulgaria project of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and with BTA’s own funds. An external facade lighting system with various light scenarios was installed, enhancing the building’s appearance and making the surrounding area more attractive.
On March 1, the facade of the BTA building was illuminated in white and red on the occasion of Baba Marta (the equivalent to “Happy Spring”).
For the first time, the BTA building was illuminated on February 16, 2025, when the Agency marked its 127th anniversary. The celebration concluded with a demonstration of the new lighting installation, with BTA lit in the colours of the Bulgarian tricolour – white, green and red.
In 2025, the Agency’s building was illuminated in the national colours for March 3. On the night of March 7 to 8, BTA greeted women on the occasion of International Women’s Day with a light inscription on its facade. On March 22, the lights were switched off for one hour – from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm – as the Agency joined the global initiative Earth Hour. On the nights before Good Friday and Holy Saturday, the facade was illuminated in red as a symbol of Christ’s blood shed on the cross. On Easter night and throughout Bright Week, as a symbol of the Resurrection of Christ, the BTA building was illuminated in white. The Agency’s facade is also lit in festive colours for New Year and in support of various international initiatives and campaigns.
