Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC) President Vesela Lecheva Thursday told reporters that the committee has received an invitation from the newly elected President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kirsty Coventry, for a meeting. The meeting will take place in Lausanne in late August and will focus on cooperation between the two organizations, as well as their future plans.
“The most important development at the Bulgarian Olympic Committee over the past few weeks is that we received an invitation from International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry. At the end of the month, our delegation will travel to Lausanne, where we will discuss our vision and prospects. I also look forward to hearing the new President’s plans for the development of IOC. We also have several events planned in Bulgaria. A Summer Olympic Festival will be held in Vratsa. This marks a new approach by our Olympic Committee to organizing these festivals. Our goal is to select a municipality each year to host both a winter and a summer festival, helping us attract more supporters of the Olympic movement. This year, Vratsa expressed an interest. The city has been investing in upgrading its sports facilities for some time. The festival will take place from September 17 to 20, and we will sign an agreement with Vratsa Municipality in the coming days,” Lecheva said.
“Another important issue is the state of the BOC headquarters. It was not a suitable working environment, but thanks to the joint efforts of our staff and leadership, we managed to return the building to a normal state. We are looking for more suitable premises because the current building is too small. For now, through strict discipline, we have managed to cover the expenses inherited from the previous leadership. Unfortunately, however, new liabilities continue to emerge. This slows down our work because it consumes valuable time and energy. We are seeking sponsors and commercial partners to support us and are currently in talks with several companies. I hope we will have positive results very soon,” she added.
Lecheva said that one of the biggest challenges facing BOC is the steady emergence of financial obligations dating back to the tenure of the previous leadership, headed by Stefka Kostadinova. “At the last meeting of the BOC Executive Bureau, we announced that the committee’s liabilities stood at EUR 360,000. Since then, newly uncovered obligations have increased that figure by another EUR 80,000. Our Secretary General, Danail Dimov, can provide more details on the matter,” Lecheva noted.
She added that the committee is now operating normally following the conclusion of the legal disputes and confirmed that funding from the International Olympic Committee, which had been suspended last year, has now been restored.
