Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian Parliament is scheduled to vote on the appointment of a deputy governor of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), according to the National Assembly’s agenda for Thursday.
At Wednesday’s plenary sitting, lawmakers presented the nomination of Dr Assen Medjidiev, who was put forward by Progressive Bulgaria on June 16. Parliament was unable to vote on his candidacy because the sitting ended before the item could be considered. Medjidiev, the sole nominee for the post, was heard by the parliamentary healthcare committee last week, where he outlined his priorities.
The agenda also includes votes on the early termination of the mandates of NHIF Governor Petko Stefanovski and Deputy Governor Momchil Mavrov. Stefanovski submitted his resignation on June 10. Later the same day, Mavrov also stepped down.
On June 9, the parliamentary group of Progressive Bulgaria tabled draft resolutions seeking the early termination of the mandates of Stefanovski and Mavrov. Subsequently, Democratic Bulgaria called for Mavrov’s resignation, describing him as “one of the symbols of corrupt practices in the Bulgarian healthcare system”. The parliamentary group of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) also demanded the dismissal of the NHIF’s entire leadership.
The National Assembly’s agenda also includes a hearing of Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev regarding information held by the Interior Ministry in connection with media reports about private flights allegedly taken by MRF Chair Delyan Peevski, the source of funding for those flights, and information concerning the other passengers on board.
