Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil and his church delegation arrived in Jordan on Monday, accompanied by Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, the Bulgarian Patriarchate said.
Daniil was welcomed by Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, King Abdullah II of Jordan’s chief adviser for religious and cultural affairs and personal envoy.
The pilgrimage programme in Jordan, part of Daniil’s irenic visit to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, began at the cave of St John the Baptist, where the saint is said to have lived as an ascetic. The delegation also visited Elijah’s Hill, traditionally believed to be the place from which the Prophet Elijah ascended to heaven. A monastery was later built on the site.
Daniil’s irenic visit will continue until September 30.
He arrived in Israel on September 25 for his first irenic visit to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. He undertook the visit at Theophilos’s invitation and following a decision by the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church – Bulgarian Patriarchate.
