Bulgarian Politicians React to News of Trump-Putin Diesel Deal 2026

Following the news of a diesel deal between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova and other politicians offered their interpretations and expectations on Saturday.
US President Donald Trump on Friday stated that Russia had agreed to supply diesel fuel to the US and global markets to help lower prices – a move that drew sharp criticism from Ukraine, dpa reported. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to the shipments during a “highly successful discussion” over the phone. The Kremlin confirmed the agreement, saying that Russia was ready to supply oil and petroleum products to all markets.
Approached for comment, President Iotova said: “I view all these matters as part of a broader set of issues; they will likely be relevant in some way to the talks with Ukraine in the US; representatives of European institutions have been invited there.” She told reporters that no predictions should be made in advance, because “we are counting on specific steps and viewing all these events and agreements as a single, comprehensive question and answer.” “Let us see what this agreement specifically entails, because this is still preliminary information; I cannot commit to a more precise position,” the President emphasized. She hopes the deal will have a global impact because, in her words, the shortage of diesel and other fuels is causing difficulties throughout Europe.
Progressive Bulgaria MP and Deputy Parliament Chair Ivan Angelov told Nova TV: “A lot is happening; one thing is said before noon, another in the afternoon, and what actually happens afterward is something else entirely.” According to him, Bulgaria’s best course of action is to wait and see what concrete steps are taken and then analyze the situation. “I believe that any extreme position would be extremely counterproductive at this time. Both our foreign policy and Bulgaria’s stance as a whole clearly show that we must be careful in our statements and vigilant about everything that is happening.” In his words, he would not go so far as to say that an act by one country is a gift. According to Angelov, the conflict in Ukraine must ultimately be resolved through diplomatic channels.
GERB leader Boyko Borissov commented on Facebook: “While other countries are doing everything they can to secure fuel supplies for their own economies, we are allowing fuel to leave the country. On September 23, 2026, Rumen Radev’s government, in Rumen Radev’s National Assembly, with the votes of Rumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria, lifted the ban on exports of petroleum products from Bulgaria. I publicly warned at the time that lifting the ban on diesel fuel exports was a gross mistake that would bring huge profits to certain traders at the expense of consumers. I said that the interests of a handful of people cannot take precedence over those of Bulgarian farmers, transport operators, businesses and entrepreneurs.” The State should protect the national interest rather than line the pockets of a handful of people, Borissov added.
Continue the Change (CC) Floor Leader Nikolay Denkov sees the deal as driven by Trump’s domestic political problems. With elections approaching, fuel and other prices have risen in the United States, Denkov said in an interview on Nova TV’s morning programme. According to Denkov, the US President is seeking a quick solution “to save himself from a heavy defeat in the upcoming elections”. “My concern is that Putin is now trying to strike a deal to take over Eastern Europe – Ukraine, the Baltic states, Moldova, and perhaps further south towards Bulgaria and Romania – and that this could pave the way for tragic events,” the CC Floor Leader said. When agreements that disregard principles and encourage the rule of force are concluded, they can have long-lasting consequences, as happened in both World War I and World War II, Denkov added.
