President Iliana Iotova met with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on the sidelines of the general political debate during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, US, the President’s Press Secretariat said on Wednesday. The two discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation between their countries in all areas of mutual interest. Iotova and Madbouly highlighted the high level of political contacts between Bulgaria and Egypt.
The President renewed her longstanding invitation to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to visit Bulgaria.
Madbouly, for his part, highlighted Bulgaria’s significant role in relations between Egypt and the European Union.
Iotova highlighted opportunities for joint energy projects at a time when fuel supplies are at risk. Raw materials imported from Egypt support Bulgarian defence production, she stressed.
Iotova and Madbouly also discussed opportunities to boost tourism. They stressed the need to establish a direct air route between Sofia and Cairo.
“Many Egyptian citizens have completed their higher education in Bulgaria, and they are a natural bridge between our two peoples,” Iotova said.
She highlighted Egypt’s important role in resolving conflicts in the Middle East.
