Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova said on Monday that she would meet Iva Mihaylova at the first opportunity, after learning earlier in the day that Mihaylova was in Bulgaria for medical tests and treatment.
Mihaylova holds dual citizenship of Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia. A crash in North Macedonia in October 2025 left one person dead and several others injured, including Mihaylova. Her documents were seized from her by the authorities after the accident, preventing her from seeking medical treatment in Bulgaria. On July 6, the Basic Court in Kocani opened proceedings against Mihaylova, who is charged with a serious road traffic violation in the Republic of North Macedonia. The Bulgarian State has put up a considerable effort to convince the authorities in Skopje to allow her to travel to Bulgaria for treatment or permit a Bulgarian medical team to examine her.
“I will meet with Iva Mihaylova at the first opportunity,” Iotova told reporters after attending an international security conference.
The President said she had not been asked to provide any assistance for Mihaylova’s arrival in Bulgaria. She added that she had learned that morning that Mihaylova was in the country and was being examined at Sofia’s Pirogov Hospital.
“Even if they keep her in hospital, I will do everything possible to meet with her,” Iotova said, adding that Mihaylova’s safety could not be threatened on Bulgarian soil.
“The question now is to see what her condition is and take the urgent measures we have been calling for for months, not only here in Bulgaria but also before all international institutions,” the President said.
Earlier on Monday, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told reporters that Mihaylova was at Pirogov Hospital with her lawyer. She would be questioned about whether, when, how and where she had crossed the Bulgarian border, he said.
