Assoc. Prof. Menent Shukrieva, a lecturer in Turkish Language and Literature at Konstantin Preslavsky University of Shumen, was honoured for her contribution to the development and promotion of the Turkish language and for her academic work, the Turkish Language Association reported on Friday. Shukrieva’s award from the Turkish Language Association was presented by Turkiye’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy at a ceremony held at the Ataturk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History in Ankara.
Shukrieva graduated with a Master’s degree in Turkish Philology from Shumen University in 1997. She began her professional career as a Turkish-language teacher and has been a lecturer in the University’s Department of Turkish Language and Literature since 1999. In 2018, she defended her doctoral dissertation, Contemporary Turkish Legal Terminology, and in 2022 she became an associate professor.
In 2026, she was elected a corresponding member of the Turkish Language Association, becoming the first Turkologist in the history of Shumen University to receive the distinction.
At the ceremony, Ersoy stressed that language is not merely a means of communication but embodies a nation’s history, civilization and shared values. He outlined efforts to increase the reach and impact of the Turkish language through its promotion, cultural enrichment, use in diplomacy and improvements in education. The Minister highlighted the role of the Yunus Emre Institute in teaching Turkish around the world, as well as that of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency in restoring and preserving old manuscripts.
The four awards were presented ahead of September 26, designated as Turkish Language Day. This other three recipients were Ankara University lecturer Prof. Gulsun Leyla Uzun; Ankara University’s Faculty of Languages, History and Geography; and Turkmeneli TV.
