Balgarianovinite.com Contemporary Bulgarian writers will represent Bulgaria at the 22nd Thessaloniki International Book Fair, where Bulgaria will be the guest of honour, the organizers said on Monday. The Fair will take place from May 7 to 10 under the motto Generation of Readers / Book Generators. The forum is among the leading literary events in Southeastern Europe, bringing together authors, publishers and representatives of the book industry from dozens of countries.
In an official message published in the brochure for Bulgaria’s participation in the Thessaloniki exhibition, caretaker Culture Minister Nayden Todorov described Bulgaria’s presence as “a great honour” and an opportunity to present the richness and diversity of contemporary Bulgarian literature to Greek and international audiences.
According to him, Bulgarian literature has significantly expanded its international presence in recent years, with more works being translated and published in various languages, while Bulgarian authors and translators are receiving prestigious awards. The Minister also stressed the key role of translators as “cultural ambassadors” who build bridges between national literatures.
The organizers noted that Bulgaria’s participation in Thessaloniki is part of the broader context of deepening cultural cooperation between Bulgaria and Greece.
The programme includes established Bulgarian authors such as Teodora Dimova, Elena Aleksieva, Rene Karabash, Ina Valchanova and Iana Boukova, along with translators and representatives of the literary sector.
Bulgarian literature has achieved significant international success, including Georgi Gospodinov’s International Booker Prize in 2023, as well as numerous European and global distinctions for Bulgarian authors. Rene Karabash’s novel She Who Remains is shortlisted for 2026 Booker Prize.
According to information presented by the organizers, Bulgaria’s literary environment is active and developing, with more than 200 publishing houses operating in the market, hundreds of new titles published annually, and over 60% of Bulgarians having read at least one book in the past year.
The official opening of the fair will take place on May 6 with the participation of representatives of Greek institutions and Bulgaria’s Culture Minister.
Bulgaria’s programme includes a wide range of events, including presentations of the Bulgarian book market and funding opportunities, discussions on translation and international cooperation, meetings with authors and book launches, as well as educational initiatives and events for children.
