Bulgarians in Bessarabia Supported April Uprising by Raising Funds, Says Historian in Taraclia 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarians in Bessarabia supported the April Uprising by raising funds and forming women’s groups in Bolhrad and Comrat, historian Ivo Hristov said at the presentation of the April issue of BTA’s LIK magazine at the National Press Club in Taraclia on Monday. The issue is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising in 1876 and was presented alongside a journal of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences,
He stressed that the revolutionaries were educated people seeking European rights and freedoms, inspired by the ideas of the French Revolution and reflected in leaders like Vasil Levski and Georgi Rakovski. Hristov also noted that the uprising’s tragedy was its early outbreak – if it had started simultaneously everywhere, it might have been more successful and strengthened Bulgaria’s position internationally. According to him, the weakening Ottoman Empire created an opportunity that Bulgarian revolutionary leaders clearly recognized.
“As sad as it sounds, a genocide was carried out against the Bulgarian population. From the ashes of Batak, Bratsigovo, Perushtitsa, Novo Selo, and the monastery defended by Bacho Kiro, the new Bulgarian State was born,” Hristov recalled, adding that revolutionaries burning their own homes was deliberate, with wealthy people sacrificing everything to leave no way back, becoming most dangerous when they had nothing to lose. He noted strong preparation, including fundraising in Bessarabia and support committees, as well as women’s charitable groups after the uprising’s suppression.
Hristov emphasized the uprising’s importance, linking it to European reactions, which stirred public opinion and pushed Russia to act, leading to the Russo-Turkish War and Bulgaria’s liberation. He added that its significance is still not fully explored.
