Balgarianovinite.com Burgas Airport has the infrastructure and operational capacity to handle an expected temporary increase in passenger traffic during Eurovision 2027, with no major expansion planned specifically for the contest, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management, operator of Burgas and Varna airports, told BTA.
Burgas will host the 71st Eurovision Song Contest in 2027. The semi-finals are scheduled for May 11 and 13, with the final on May 15.
Burgas Airport is designed to handle peak demand, with capacity for up to 21 aircraft movements per hour and around 50,000 passengers within 24 hours. Fraport said its existing infrastructure and equipment are sufficient to handle the additional traffic expected from Eurovision in May 2027.
The summer 2027 flight schedule has not yet been finalized, so the number of additional scheduled or charter flights cannot be specified at this stage. The airport is in talks with airlines and partners to expand its route network and increase flight frequencies next year.
Any additional staffing needs will be determined once more details are available about flights, passenger numbers and their distribution. If necessary, additional resources can be provided in coordination with airlines, ground handlers and the relevant state authorities.
Burgas Airport operates around the clock, so no change to its operating hours is expected. Its terminal operations will be adjusted to the final flight schedule and passenger flows, with arrangements for delegations to include coordinated airport procedures, baggage handling, information services and transfers. All these arrangements will comply with aviation security, border control and customs requirements. The airport operator said a coordinated operational plan would be put in place involving the airport, airlines, ground handlers and other relevant authorities. Based on the final flight schedule, staffing, terminal capacity, ground handling, baggage processing and passenger flows will be planned accordingly. Fraport said the detailed operational plan for Eurovision will be developed and updated as more information becomes available.
No major infrastructure investment is currently considered necessary specifically for the contest. The airport underwent runway and adjacent-area rehabilitation in 2025 and 2026 at a cost of over EUR 60 million, which Fraport described as the largest standalone private investment in airport infrastructure in Bulgaria.
