Balgarianovinite.com The Council of Ministers is proposing that the National Assembly authorize the presence on Bulgarian territory of up to eight KC-135 aircraft, up to 250 members of the US Armed Forces with personal weapons and ammunition, as well as the necessary airport equipment, the Council of Ministers press service reported on Monday.
The decision is based on a diplomatic note received from the United States requesting that these assets be stationed at the Bezmer Air Base, South Central Bulgaria, between July 24 and October 1, 2026. The goal is to provide support for US operations in the Middle East.
The government’s proposal is in accordance with the 2006 Agreement between Bulgaria and the United States on Defence Cooperation, under which the Bezmer Air Base is designated as a facility for joint use. Given the nature of the stated intention for the deployment, as announced in the US note, the decision on the deployment must be made by the National Assembly.
On Tuesday, the parliamentary Committee on Defence will convene an extraordinary session to consider a draft resolution authorizing the presence on Bulgarian territory of military personnel and aircraft from the US Armed Forces.
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported: “On June 17, we received a diplomatic note from the US Embassy requesting the deployment of up to eight aerial refuelling aircraft at Bezmer Air Base to support US operations in the Middle East, pursuant to the 2006 Defence Cooperation Agreement between Bulgaria and the United States.
