Canadian guitarist Don Ross will give his first concert in Bulgaria at Pave club on Thursday, the event’s organizers said.
The concert is scheduled for October 15, 2026. The organizers described Ross as a pioneer of contemporary fingerstyle whose exceptional technique transforms the traditional acoustic guitar into an entire orchestra, combining a lead melody, bass line and dynamic percussive rhythm.
He redefines what is possible with six strings or more, they said. “No one does what Don Ross does with an acoustic guitar. He takes corners so fast you think he’s going to roll over, but he never loses control,” Bruce Cockburn has said of him.
Ross blends groove, funk, jazz, folk and classical traditions in a sound he calls Heavy Wood: a rich, powerful style driven by forward momentum. First-time listeners could easily think they were hearing several instruments at once. His techniques include striking the guitar’s body with his palm and fingers to produce distinct snare and kick-drum sounds without interrupting the melody. Unlike most guitarists, he plays both downstrokes and upstrokes with his thumb, creating rapid funk bass lines and slap-bass textures. Unconventional open tunings give his playing powerful resonance. He also uses extended-range instruments, including baritone guitars with deep bass tones, harp guitars and seven-string models.
His career spans more than four decades. In 2021, he received Canada’s Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts. The organizers say he remains the only guitarist to have won the US National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship twice, in 1988 and 1996. Ross also holds qualifications in composition and orchestration and regularly writes music for film, television, video games and symphony orchestras. He was the first artist signed to Candyrat Records, which the organizers described as a global hub for the acoustic guitar revolution of the internet age.
