Balgarianovinite.com Inspections by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food found serious gaps in animal waste management, caretaker Minister of Agriculture and Food Ivan Hristanov said on Saturday.
He spoke at an event marking the start of the fire-risk season. Data presented by Hristanov show that only about 3.5% of livestock sites actually transport dead animals under the established procedure. Around 27% have contracts but do not implement them, while approximately 70% have neither contracts nor organized transport. “We are asking ourselves where these dead animals went if they were not incinerated as required by the procedure, something Bulgaria pays for,” Hristanov said.
He said this raised serious suspicions of unregulated practices, including illegal meat processing and trade. Such sites have been found in Montana, Vratsa and Lesidren. Hristanov said such activities endanger human health.
“This network for creating, producing and selling illegal food cannot exist without political protection at the highest level,” Hristanov said. He said the Ministry would continue active inspections and would push for the illegal practices to be stopped, leaving this policy as a priority for the next regular government.
