Balgarianovinite.com Caretaker Minister of Education and Science Sergei Ignatov met with the heads of the Regional Departments of Education (RDE) on Tuesday to discuss current priorities in the sector and how to keep schools and other education institutions politically neutral during the upcoming election campaign.
Ignatov said at a briefing after the meeting that the Ministry of Education and Science would work to ensure a calm learning environment and prevent political agitation within the education system.
“The key point I emphasised was the need for Bulgarian schools to remain completely free of any political agitation and for partisan conduct not to be tolerated,” Ignatov said at a briefing after the meeting.
Ignatov said the government was ambitious and would do everything possible to ensure the elections were fair and transparent. He added that the Ministry of Education and Science’s role was to create a calm environment in which teaching and learning could continue smoothly, without disruption, and to ensure that the education system was not politicized under any circumstances.
He added that amendments to the Pre-school and School Education Act were due to be discussed at second reading in the National Assembly’s Committee on Education and Science on Wednesday. The Council of Ministers was not the sponsor, and he would attend in his capacity as a representative of the education sector, able to express an opinion but unable to support either side, since he was not the sponsor.
In response to a journalist’s question, Ignatov said that working groups had prepared a draft proposal for changes to the curricula. He added that the ministry’s teams wanted to lighten the programme, but this ran up against various professional groups who wanted “everything to be poured into our children’s heads”. “I want children to have time to think. I cannot carry out a reform in two or three months, but I will help move the process in that direction,” Ignatov said.
