CC Chair in Istanbul: It Is Painful to Live Far from Home, Good Hospitals, Schools, Roads and Wages Will Make Bulgarians Return 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Continue the Change (CC) Chair Assen Vassilev, the party’s Deputy Chair Nikolay Denkov, as well as Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) top-of-the-list candidates in Shumen and Kardzhali Aylin Pehlivanova and Sebahattin Gyokche, met with Bulgarian expatriates in Istanbul, Turkiye, CC’s press centre said here on Monday. “The hall was filled to capacity with hundreds of our compatriots. The meeting discussed the problems of Bulgarians in Turkiye, and CC representatives committed to putting them on the table for resolution in the very first days of the new parliament,” the press release reads.
Vassilev explained his personal belief that people should not be divided into Bulgarians, Christians, Muslims or Roma. “All of us are Bulgarian citizens, we love our country, we pay our taxes there and we want it to care for all Bulgarian citizens like a mother, not like a stepmother to some,” he said. Vassilev argued that, unfortunately, there are still many people in Bulgaria who are afraid and who are not free. “There are many people for whom our country is a stepmother. How many of you like the roads when you return to Bulgaria Not because there is no money – there is money, but it is being shamelessly stolen. And those who refuse to steal and to take part in the schemes are put in prison, instead of those who steal,” he said, adding: “Nothing in Bulgaria will improve until the thieves go to prison.”
The CC leader said that he had lived abroad for 10 years. “I know how painful and sad it is to be far from home. And I know that no one chooses that for a good reason. If we do our job as politicians, all of you, as well as all Bulgarians around the world, will want to return to Bulgaria – with good hospitals, good schools, good roads and good wages,” the former finance minister (2021, 2021-2022, 2023-2024) said. “Over the past four years, Bulgaria has begun to catch up with European wages and people have started to live a little better. This was not magic – it was our understanding that the money from your taxes must be returned to you,” he added.
Vassilev told Bulgarian expatriates in Istanbul what the Denkov cabinet (2023–2024) did for the development of regions in Bulgaria: “A programme for municipal projects was developed, under which every mayor can apply for funding to improve roads, water supply, playgrounds and kindergartens. And the money should not be allocated based on whether the mayor is a friend of the finance minister or the prime minister, but on how many people live in that municipality,” he said.
Bulgarian expatriates raised the question of why there are only 20 polling stations in Turkiye, the UK and the US. “Because the same people who steal from you want to steal your right to vote as well. My colleagues and I fought, but unfortunately, with our 36 MPs we did not have enough strength to stop this law,” Vassilev responded. He guaranteed that in the next parliament this would be one of the first laws to be introduced for consideration. The CC delegation committed to proposing changes so that Bulgarian citizens can submit documents electronically to consular services, as well as to resolve the issue of pensions fairly – so that everyone who has contributed to a system can receive from it in return.
