Balgarianovinite.com Parliamentary Committee on Policies for Bulgarians Abroad Chair and Vazrazhdane MP Angel Georgiev sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry calling for a response to the arson attack on diplomatic vehicles of the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje, the party’s press centre said on Monday.
Earlier in the day, an unidentified individual set fire to two diplomatic vehicles of Bulgaria’s Embassy in Skopje, which were parked in front of the mission’s main entrance. The Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, saying that “this latest attack against Bulgaria and Bulgarians is the result of aggressive political rhetoric that fuels hatred. The lack of an adequate institutional response in previous similar high-profile cases creates a sense of impunity among the perpetrators”.
Georgiev expressed his protest against “this hostile act directed against the diplomatic mission of Bulgaria”. “Such an attack on property enjoying diplomatic protection constitutes a gross violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, undermines the authority and dignity of the Bulgarian State and raises serious concern about the security of Bulgarian diplomatic representatives and staff,” he wrote in his letter to the Ministry.
He insisted that the Bulgarian State take immediate action, including summoning North Macedonia Ambassador to Bulgaria Agneza Rusi Popovska for explanations. Georgiev also called for the authorities in North Macedonia to be asked to immediately investigate the incident, for additional security to be provided for the embassy, for a protest note expressing Bulgaria’s position to be sent, and for Bulgaria’s National Assembly to be informed of all measures taken as soon as possible.
“It is unacceptable for such incidents to once again remain without a timely and resolute diplomatic response. Silence or half-hearted reactions only encourage future manifestations of hostility. I expect the necessary diplomatic and institutional measures to be taken immediately and to be informed in due course about their results,” Georgiev further wrote in his letter.
