The White House removed CNN from a scheduled television pool assignment covering President Donald Trump on Monday, just days after the president declared he was “banning” three major news organizations from the White House.
CNN had been due to serve as the TV pool network on Monday and accompany Trump to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, under a decades-old rotation shared by ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News. But guidance from the White House on Sunday night omitted any primary television network from Monday’s pool schedule.
The move came after Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were being barred from the White House. Reporters from all three outlets were turned away from the complex on Saturday, and the organizations are preparing a First Amendment lawsuit challenging the restrictions.
The television pool system allows one network each day to provide video, audio, and reporting to the wider White House press corps when access is restricted. Footage is then distributed to other broadcasters and news organizations around the world.
Hearst was named as the secondary TV crew in Washington, while pro-Trump network Real America’s Voice was assigned secondary duties for the New York trip. Secondary crews do not normally carry out the full responsibilities of the primary pool.
The switch comes as CNN, MS NOW, and Politico announced they will file a federal lawsuit against Trump and several senior administration officials, alleging the White House ban amounts to viewpoint discrimination in violation of the First Amendment. On Monday, the outlets announced they are seeking an immediate court order restoring their reporters’ press credentials and access.
The lawsuit accuses Trump of imposing the restrictions “for the improper purpose of retaliating against Plaintiffs for past news coverage because he deemed it ‘negative’ and chilling future reporting about him and his administration’s policies and actions.”
