Balgarianovinite.com European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy Jessika Roswall said here on Thursday that talks with Bulgarian Environment and Water Minister Rositsa Karamfilova had focused on the importance of effectively implementing EU environmental legislation and on the opportunities that could be unlocked through European funding and technical support. Roswall spoke at a news briefing following her meeting with Karamfilova earlier in the day as part of her first official visit to Bulgaria as EU Commissioner.
Roswall said the European Commission supported Bulgaria’s efforts to strengthen resilience, boost growth and regional development, and improve quality of life for citizens. She added that the Commission stood ready to continue supporting those efforts. Roswall noted that the shared objective was to build a more sustainable Europe capable of withstanding future challenges, securing its natural resources, and strengthening competitiveness in an uncertain world.
She added that the meeting had also focused on the shared responsibility of strengthening Europe’s resilience and on Bulgaria’s important role in contributing to that goal as part of the European family. Environmental sustainability is not an isolated objective but a key factor for Europe’s long-term competitiveness, economic prosperity, and security, Roswall said. She noted that the EU was facing growing challenges linked to climate change, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and resource constraints. Addressing those issues is essential for protecting citizens, supporting businesses, and ensuring sustainable growth, she added. Discussions also covered how Bulgaria could both benefit from and contribute to achieving European goals related to water sustainability, the circular economy, and environmental protection, the EU Commissioner said.
She added that access to water resources, modern infrastructure, healthy ecosystems, and the efficient use of resources were becoming increasingly strategic assets for European economies and societies. Investments in these areas would help reduce vulnerabilities, improve preparedness, and create new opportunities for innovation and competitiveness.
