Balgarianovinite.com The constitutional challenge against the state budget will be filed after the law is published in the State Gazette, Vladislav Goranov of GERB-UDF told journalists in parliament on Tuesday. He added that talks are under way with representatives of parliamentary groups that did not support the state budget in an effort to collect the required 48 signatures.
“We believe that President Iliana Iotova, if she does not want to share responsibility for this ‘fiscal binge’, should return the Budget Act for further consideration before it is published,” Goranov said.
On Sunday, GERB leader Boyko Borissov said in Varna that the budget is unconstitutional and that GERB will refer the matter to the Constitutional Court. He argued that the adopted state budget violates fiscal rules regarding the permitted budget deficit, which should be limited to 3%.
On Tuesday, Democratic Bulgaria said that no talks have yet been held with them about supporting a complaint to the Constitutional Court.
Commenting on the search for a presidential candidate, Goranov said GERB is unlikely to nominate a party candidate, but believes it will be a mistake if there is not a joint right-wing nomination.
“In my view, the attempt by some parliamentary parties to predetermine the issue by putting forward a common candidate is a mistake,” the MP said. According to Goranov, the aim will be to find a suitable candidate with the qualities of a statesman.
“If any of the parties insists on a specific candidate with a strong party affiliation, the chances of defeating Iliana Iotova will be negligible,” Goranov said. He argued that right-wing forces can win only if they unite behind a single candidate.
In a personal capacity, Goranov said he would vote for former education and science minister Daniel Valchev if he ran for president.
