Critics Tear Into ‘Pathetic’ Susan Collins After Troy Jackson Senate Debate: ‘Doddering on a Debate Stage’ 2026

Critics shredded incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) for her debate performance against Democratic challenger Troy Jackson — ripping the veteran politician’s responses as “pathetic.”

Collins, 73, is in a competitive race with Jackson, 58, who scored a headline-making zing against the incumbent after she tried to brag about getting road salt off of President Donald Trump’s tariff list.

“I have been strongly voting against the tariffs with Canada,” Collins said during the debate. “I’ve also been working behind the scenes. Troy mocked it, but I was successful in getting concrete, pulp, and road salt removed from the tariff list.”

“We can’t eat road salt,” Jackson immediately quipped.

Journalist David Sirota called the exchange, “Susan Collins’ amazing let-them-eat-road-salt moment.”

Pennsylvania State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (D) also appreciated the comeback.

Others slammed Collins for her vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and a different moment involving health care, in which Jackson claimed the longtime politician — who first entered Congress in 1997 — had “always had health care.”

Collins tried to respond by pointing out she hasn’t always had health care, going without the precious benefit for a year in 1994 while running for governor.

The snapback failed to impress.

Based on tonight’s debate, Collins seems entombed in the category of senators who are past their sell-by dates but remain certain they have a formula—and then find themselves doddering on a debate stage and then, after election day, wondering why that formula didn’t work anymore.
