Balgarianovinite.com Minister of Culture Evtim Miloshev removed the National Palace of Culture’s Board of Directors, the Ministry of Culture said on Thursday.
Iya Petkova-Angelova, Tsvetelina Nikolova, Lachezar Vesov, Boris Pankin and Ivanka Veselinova were elected to replace them. The new members’ term will run until a competitive selection procedure is held, but for no more than six months.
At its first meeting, the Board of Directors elected Petkova-Angelova executive director. From 2015 to 2020, she headed the Strategic Development Department at the National Palace of Culture.
Despite deteriorating financial indicators in recent years, pay for the National Palace of Culture’s Board of Directors doubled from 2024 and nearly tripled from 2023, even as the company reported a loss and had accumulated losses of almost EUR 49 million, Miloshev told a news conference on June 5. Board remuneration totalled more than EUR 103,000 in 2023, EUR 157,989 in 2024 and EUR 304,534 in 2025. Executive director Andriyana Petkova Tatarova’s remuneration in 2025 was EUR 200,681, or EUR 13,680 a month, Miloshev said, giving all figures in euro.
At a June 25 meeting of the Committee on Culture and Media, Miloshev said Tatarova had been removed from the National Palace of Culture’s Board of Directors, but that this did not release her from liability. He said Tatarova was required to refrain from exercising any powers as a member of the company’s Board of Directors until her name was struck from the Commercial Register at the Registry Agency. Miloshev also terminated Tatarova’s management contract.
At the June 25 hearing, Miloshev said he had received numerous reports of violations and irregular practices, prompting checks by the Culture Ministry inspectorate and an internal audit. On the basis of the inspectorate’s report, Miloshev removed Tatarova from the Board of Directors and terminated her management contract, effective June 24.
Earlier in June, Miloshev said the remuneration of the National Palace of Culture’s director and Board of Directors had been set by an unlawful act and would be recalculated. He also said he would seek the recovery of about EUR 100,000 in salaries paid since August and rejected claims that he was trying to take control of the institution, saying the Culture Ministry exercises the state’s ownership rights in the wholly state-owned company.
