Balgarianovinite.com Speaking to the Bulgarian News Agency on Wednesday, caretaker Culture Minister Nayden Todorov commented on the exhibition “150 Years of the April Uprising: Stories and Narratives of a Heroic Era,” which opened at the National History Museum earlier in the day. He said that such exhibitions are important not only for young people but for everyone, as they offer a more personal perspective beyond what can be found in books.
Todorov added that one of the most important aspects is the opportunity to see the artefacts that “connect us to that period.” “It is one thing to talk about it, to think about it, to read about it. It is another to actually see it,” he said.
In his words, the key “question is not what kind of Bulgaria we want to leave behind, but who will shape it the way we want it to be.“ Referring to the April Uprising, he noted that it was conceived and carried out by young, energetic people with ideas and little experience. “Were there no mature people in Bulgaria at the time? There were. But their maturity held them back. That is something we need to reflect on. Young people sacrificed themselves so that we could exist today. Those who had the knowledge and experience stood on the sidelines. And that is the question I want us to raise today,” Todorov added.
The Minister said that ”young people should not again be sidelined by the spectators, those with the experience.” “Otherwise, we risk ending up with the same outcome as during the April Uprising,“ he noted.
The exhibition “150 Years of the April Uprising: Stories and Narratives of a Heroic Era” presents the events through a comprehensive narrative, combining authentic artifacts – some shown to the public for the first time – with carefully created replicas and reconstructions of lost items, based on historical records, photographs, and documentary evidence.
