Customs officers from the Drug Trafficking Department at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint seized a total of 196 packages containing 221.73 kg of marijuana worth nearly EUR 1,814,000 during an inspection of a truck leaving Bulgaria for Turkiye, the press centre of the Customs Agency in Svilengrad reported on Wednesday. On October 12, a Ukrainian national was charged after the vehicle he was driving was found to contain the drug, the press office of the Plovdiv Appellate Prosecution Office said.
The drug trafficking operation was uncovered half an hour before midnight on Monday, when a tractor unit with a semi-trailer bearing Ukrainian registration arrived at the checkpoint. The driver declared that he was transporting coniferous wood from Ukraine to Turkiye via Romania and Bulgaria. Following a risk analysis, the vehicle was selected for an X-ray inspection, which revealed unusual densities in the cargo compartment.
During the subsequent physical inspection, customs officers found bags with dry green plant material hidden among the declared cargo. A field test confirmed that the packages contained marijuana.
The driver was detained for 72 hours, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated.
