Balgarianovinite.com The Czech short film Gently, directed by Jamaica Kindlova, won the Grand Prix at the 22nd World Festival of Animated Film (WFAF) in Varna, Bulgaria, the organizers told BTA on Sunday. The hand-drawn film was made using charcoal. It explores the fear of home through the eyes of a young boy who is constantly on alert and preparing to escape. Gently was part of the festival’s student competition programme.
The puppet animation Please, directed by Anna Mantzaris and co-produced by Czechia, Finland, Norway and Sweden, was named Best Short Film. The black comedy recalls the need for closeness, intimacy and romantic love. A Special Mention in this category went to the German drawn animation Daughters of the Late Colonel by Elizabeth Hobbs, based on Katherine Mansfield’s 1920 modernist short story of the same name.
The highest-rated Bulgarian production at the 22nd WFAF was the 15-minute film Nephila by director Kristian Zahariev, made using mixed media combining collages and drawings. It focuses on the difficulties of communication experienced by a young man in love who is unable to express his feelings to the girl he likes. A Special Mention in this category went to the fantasy 2D animation (Dis)connected by Bulgarian director Yoni (Yoana Plachkova), which tells the story of contact between an astronaut and another being in space.
The five-minute 2D animation Found was named Best Children’s Film in the competition. It is a French-Belgian production directed by Juliette Baily. A Special Mention went to Under and Over the Bed by Bulgaria’s Sofia Sokerova and Sonya Raynova, which tells the story of young Pepi’s fear of the monsters inhabiting his home.
The festival’s competition programmes were judged by an international jury comprising Andrea Bauer from Germany, Velislava Gospodinova from Bulgaria, Katarzyna Surmich from Poland, Mariam Kandelaki from Georgia and Sophie Mirouze from France.
