During the international conference The Black Sea and Eastern Europe: Key to European Security in Sofia on Monday, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said that the Transport Ministry is expected to contact organizations capable of providing an underwater drone to survey the sunken ship in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea.
He noted that no further operations by the Bulgarian Air Force were currently planned in connection with the two merchant ships attacked by drones in Bulgaria’s Black Sea economic zone.
Regarding assistance from NATO countries, Stoyanov said that Bulgaria had sent only one request immediately after a drone crashed near Kardam, northeastern Bulgaria, and had asked them for reinforcement with radar systems, surveillance and other equipment in order to maintain situational awareness, but no response had been received yet. We will submit a new request, the Minister added.
When asked whether Bulgaria had contacted Romania and Turkiye to ensure the safety of shipping in the Black Sea, Stoyanov said that the Defence Ministry was responsible for territorial waters. The exclusive economic zone includes international waters as well, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs might therefore be the appropriate one to make such contact, he said.
Stoyanov added that the Ministry remained in contact with their colleagues and had requested satellite imagery that might be of assistance to Bulgaria, but none had been provided so far.
