Balgarianovinite.com Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov held a meeting with Stephen Doughty, UK Minister of State for Europe, North America and Overseas Territories, in Sofia on Thursday, the Defence Ministry said in a press release. They discussed deepening industrial cooperation between Bulgaria and the United Kingdom, security in the Black Sea region, the development of defence capabilities within NATO, countering hybrid threats, and the war in Ukraine.
Minister Stoyanov noted that Bulgarian defence companies are working successfully with British firms, and that there is significant potential for expanding the partnership. He emphasized that the Bulgarian defence industry is undergoing a process of accelerated modernization and is increasingly integrating with NATO standards and requirements.
The sides also discussed the war in Ukraine. “We are convinced that the conflict will not be resolved on the battlefield. We see that more and more EU heads of state are beginning to talk about sitting down at the negotiating table. We must think of the people on the front lines, because these are human lives,” Stoyanov stated. Minister Doughty noted that the United Kingdom also supports diplomatic efforts, but so far Russia continues to escalate its attacks against Ukraine.
Doughty stressed the importance of unity within NATO, as well as the need for all allies to increase investment in defence and capability development. He emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation in this area, noting that hybrid attacks and disinformation are becoming an increasingly serious challenge for the allies.
The guest also met with Foreign Minister Petrova-Chamova. The two discussed the progress and future prospects of the strategic partnership between the two countries in various areas.
