Balgarianovinite.com Speaking at a regular video conference with military contingents abroad on the eve of May 6th, Day of Valour and of the Bulgarian Armed Forces, caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov said Monday that he expects the defence budget to be increased, as Bulgaria has committed to do so.
In his welcome address, Zapryanov emphasized that by performing tasks in NATO and European Union missions and operations in various parts of the world, military personnel contribute enormously to the fulfilment of the international commitments that the country has undertaken. He used the occasion to briefly review the past year in defence, noting that the leading priority is ensuring national security through the building of modern, effective and interoperable armed forces with the country’s allies in NATO and the European Union.
Zapryanov said that he hopes the loan agreement and the agreement for the operational management of the SAFE mechanism will also be signed, which will begin the implementation of the national plan for the modernization of the Bulgarian Armed Forces.
“We worked intensively on technological rearmament, gradually filling the high number of vacant positions for military personnel and building the necessary military infrastructure. We focused our efforts on the accelerated modernization of the Bulgarian Army and the development of capabilities in all operational domains. We paid special attention to caring for people in defence – the most important resource in our defence system”, said the caretaker Minister.
On April 1, the caretaker government approved a report on the state of the defence and the Bulgarian Armed Forces for 2025. The main conclusion of the report was that the existing capacity deficits in the armed forces cannot be overcome by maintaining defence spending within 2% of the Gross Domestic Product.
