Balgarianovinite.com A Bulgarian delegation visiting the Ukrainian city of Bolhrad for celebrations marking the 205th anniversary of its founding toured the Regional Centre for Bulgarian Culture in the city. During the visit, the delegation explored the centre and its exhibits, gaining an insight into the life of Bessarabian Bulgarians through their customs, traditional costumes, songs, household objects and cultural traditions.
The delegation members taking part in the celebrations included Rositsa Kirova, Chair of the Tourism Committee in Bulgaria’s 52nd National Assembly; Zlatin Krustev, Bulgaria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine; Svetoslav Ivanov, Bulgaria’s Consul General in Odesa; Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA); Ilian Zanev, Third Secretary at Bulgaria’s Consulate General in Odesa; and Rayna Mandzhukova, Executive Director of the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad.
Staff at the Bulgarian Centre, headed by its director Galina Ivanova, welcomed the delegation, emphasizing that the Bulgarian spirit in Bessarabia has connected generations for more than 200 years.
“Bolhrad’s Day is a celebration not only of a city, but also of its memory, history and people. We are pleased to welcome the Bulgarian delegation on this special day and to share with them the festive spirit and respect for the Bulgarian heritage preserved here through generations,” Ivanova said.
“The work of our cultural institution is connected with marking all traditional and national holidays of the Bulgarian people, as well as Ukrainian national holidays. We also take part in events organized throughout Bessarabia. Our main areas of work are educational, research and methodological, and cultural research activities. This is primarily reflected in promoting Bulgarian culture and the Bulgarian language and reviving Bulgarian traditions, rituals and customs. We have chosen festivals, art exhibitions, competitions and meetings with figures from science and culture as our main forms of work,” Ivanova said.
She also explained that the centre has maintained an active publishing programme since 2002 and has published 12 books. Most are collections of articles and materials from conferences and round-table discussions organized by the centre. One such series comprises five volumes of Bulgarian Bessarabia, addressing contemporary issues related to the language and literature, history and art of Bulgarians in Ukraine and Moldova.
“Another book published by us is Orthodox Churches in the Bulgarian and Gagauz Settlements in Ukraine and Moldova. Based on archival records, it examines the construction and functioning of churches in Bulgarian and Gagauz villages. Our publications mainly focus on the history, culture, folklore and literature of Bulgarians in Bessarabia,” the director added.
Ivanova said that over the years, traditional Bulgarian celebrations that are observed in Bulgaria – including Babinden, Trifon Zarezan, Baba Marta, Lazarus Saturday, Easter, St George’s Day and St Nicholas Day, have been revived in almost the entire Bolhrad District.
“We are proud that many of the celebrations initiated by us have become part of the festive calendar of the district and the region,” she said.
The Bulgarian Centre also houses a Bulgarian library containing nearly 9,000 volumes of literature in Bulgarian, including works of Bulgarian classics. According to Ivanova, the library is used by prospective students seeking admission to Bulgarian higher education institutions, as well as by pupils and young people from across Bessarabia.
The Bulgarian guests also toured an ethnographic Bulgarian house established at the centre with the assistance of the Konstantinov family from the village of Chiyshiya (Horodnie). The house recreates the everyday life of Bessarabian Bulgarians during the 1930s–1960s. The exhibits, collected from a number of villages, are valuable cultural relics. Meetings held at the “Bulgarian House” are also one of the centre’s principal methods of engaging with the local community.
The Regional Centre for Bulgarian Culture was opened on December 10, 1997, and will mark its 30th anniversary in 2027.
