Balgarianovinite.com Democratic Bulgaria (DB) will have two strong candidates for president and vice president, MP Ivaylo Mirchev told journalists in Parliament on Tuesday. “Andrey Gurov is the choice of a huge part of our supporters. He is a great statesman and performed very well in the caretaker government,” Mirchev added. He is also a Co-Chair of Yes, Bulgaria – one of the two parties in the DB coalition together with Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB).
“We are following a clear plan. This plan always includes considering to what extent one of our representatives can be discredited by the yellow press with completely fabricated stories,” he added.
Regarding Progressive Bulgaria’s governmance programme, Mirchev said that it devotes the least attention to security. He believes that nothing is being done regarding the country’s geopolitical orientation either. “Yesterday, when asked where Bulgaria is, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said that there had not been many countries in Kyiv. It turned out that the UK, Germany and France were there, and it must be clear – Bulgaria should be where these countries are, rather than ‘sitting on the fence’ on all issues concerning the country’s geopolitical orientation,” Mirchev said.
According to him, economic security is the most important issue. “The middle class is currently paying the price for this insane budget,” Mirchev said.
DSB leader Radan Kanev said that the current political season sets the direction and priorities for Bulgarian society for years to come. “This is the political season that begins with a government programme that has finally been published,” he said. According to him, it is also the season in which the first budget for which the ruling party will bear full responsibility will be adopted, and for which it cannot blame previous governments. He noted that dismantling the oligarchic model is an important part of the governance programme. “We agree with the assessment that dismantling the oligarchic model is a prerequisite for pursuing any successful policy,” Kanev said.
“De-oligarchization without identifying the origins, foundations and mechanisms through which the model exists does not look like a serious political objective,” he added. “We cannot set the dismantling of oligarchy in Bulgaria as a global objective without naming the structures of the former State Security and without discussing the role of the unreformed contemporary security services in Bulgaria in this penetration into all spheres of public life,” Kanev said.
DB Deputy Floor Leader Katya Paneva said that Progressive Bulgaria’s programme proposed excessive centralization not only in education and healthcare, but also in the economy and judiciary. “We believe this is not simply dangerous, but will be a major mistake,” she said.
In a position on the healthcare section of the government programme distributed to the media, DSB said it supported specific proposals such as payment based on quality and results, mobile medical services, a greater role for healthcare professionals in outpatient care, and regional workforce planning. According to the party, the programme contains the right priorities, but some of the measures outlined are already regulated by law or funded. The task is to show how they will be built upon, rather than promised again. The party said the focus should be on unresolved problems – genuinely reducing patients’ out-of-pocket payments, fair remuneration for medical professionals, results-based funding, regional workforce planning, access to healthcare in remote areas and a functioning transplant system. Consistency with the Ministry’s actions is also needed. Regional access cannot be a priority while the programme simultaneously proposes the unproven centralization of the Regional Health Inspectorates.
“Unreformed and dependent security services have woken up these days to Taki’s [an alias of the controversial businessman Hristoforos Amanatidis] jammers,” said Yes, Bulgaria Co-Chair and DB Deputy Floor Leader Bozhidar Bozhanov. “I have one appeal to those in government – do not focus only on the jammers, and only when they start affecting civil aviation,” he said.
According to him, the security services and the Government could also wake up to Taki’s presence at Kapitan Andreevo. “There are buildings there that are still leased. The caretaker government left a draft decision for the regular government to terminate the leases with Taki’s companies at Kapitan Andreevo,” Bozhanov said.
“Let the security services check whether the video surveillance of the Road Infrastructure Agency and the Interior Ministry is being used by a company linked to Taki to track where Bulgarian citizens are going, and terminate these contracts if that is the case,” Bozhanov added.
