Balgarianovinite.com The vote on Bulgaria’s 2026 state budget, which was adopted by the National Assembly conclusively on Friday, showed that there is no pilot in the cockpit, Democratic Bulgaria (DB) MP Martin Dimitrov told reporters. “There is no pilot, no governing programme and no plan for reforms. This leaves Bulgaria facing not only a budgetary crisis but also a serious political crisis that must be addressed without delay,” Dimitrov said.
He added: “There is no pilot in the cockpit because the government deficit is growing out of control. The government’s first steps in September must be aimed at ensuring that the deficit in the 2027 budget is brought below 3%. A high deficit fuels inflation, increases public debt and sends Bulgaria into an uncontrolled downward spiral, which has already begun.”
According to Dimitrov, Prime Minister Rumen Radev must realize that his honeymoon period is over. “It’s over. There will be no 100-day grace period. It ended today. He has created this crisis himself, and it now requires an urgent response,” Dimitrov said.
“There are only a few steps left before the crisis begins to deepen and the country is drawn into the dangerous spiral that Romania and Greece experienced. The reality is that we are in a very difficult situation, so we cannot continue flying a plane without a pilot,” he added.
Another Democratic Bulgaria MP, Ivaylo Mirchev, also described the adopted budget as harmful to the country.
Mirchev said: “This budget is a recipe for leaving Bulgaria unable to respond if the economy takes a turn for the worse — and there are already indications that this could happen. If you are running a 5.7% deficit during favourable economic conditions and the economy then deteriorates, you cannot simply allow the deficit to rise to 9%, because that would lead to state bankruptcy.”
