Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria to Elect New Chair at National Assembly 2026

Balgarianovinite.com The National Assembly of Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria (DSB) will take place on Saturday at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, the forum’s organizing committee said. Delegates will elect a party chair, national leadership and governing bodies, and will set the party’s priorities for the next mandate.
Official guests, representatives of the parties in the Democratic Bulgaria coalition, non-governmental organizations and international partners have been invited to attend.
The candidates for party leader are MEP and former DSB chair Radan Kanev, MP and current DSB Deputy Chair Yordan Ivanov, and Vasko Vasilev, founder of the Dialogue Club and one of the party’s founders. All three have presented their programmes and visions for the party’s future development, which have been published on DSB’s website.
According to information published on the party’s website, Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria was founded on May 30, 2004, at Bulgaria Hall in Sofia, with former prime minister Ivan Kostov elected as its first chair. Current DSB leader Atanas Atanassov has headed the party since 2017, having previously served for several years as its deputy chair. He also chaired the party’s Sofia organization for many years.
In his vision for the party’s future, Kanev outlined what he sees as DSB’s tasks in light of new political realities. These are simple and clear, he argues, but require an ambitious vision for both the party and the country: addressing the risks stemming from what he describes as “the one-man populist rule of Prime Minister Rumen Radev”, actively contributing to the consolidation of the democratic opposition between 2026 and 2030, and presenting Bulgarian society with a bold centre-right alternative based on a new national consensus under the “Bulgaria 2050” horizon.
Preparing for the 2027 local elections is the main organizational and political priority in Ivanov’s programme for DSB’s development, published on the party’s website. His concept, titled “DSB – Stage 4,” includes plans to build stronger local organizations, encourage more active member participation in party life, foster a new generation of political leaders, and strengthen DSB’s presence both in public debate and within Democratic Bulgaria.
“My goal is to achieve high quality in everything we do in DSB,” Vasilev says in his vision for the party’s development, also published on the party’s website. He was involved in establishing the civic association Dialogue, from which DSB later emerged. “DSB is closest to the Conservatives in the United Kingdom. Inviolable private property and a free-market economy. A Christian value system. And common sense in the spending of public funds, as good stewards do. These are the principles we place at the centre of DSB’s work,” Vasilev says.
