Balgarianovinite.com On Tuesday, the serial numbers of 10 voting machines were randomly selected to be handed over by the Central Election Commission to the Electronic Governance Ministry for inspection as part of the compliance certification process. While this is a formal step, it was used this time by MRF – New Beginning to disrupt the process, Bozhidar Bozhanov, Co-Chair of the Democratic Bulgaria coalition и Deputy Floor Leader of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria parliamentary group, wrote on Facebook. Bozhanov was commenting on remarks by Stanislav Anastassov, Deputy Floor Leader of the MRF-New Beginning parliamentary group.
Bozhanov said the party appeared to be trying to stage a new “Kostinbrod-style” scandal or another sabotage similar to the one during the 2023 local elections. Bozhanov was referring to “the Kostinbrod affair”. Back in 2013, GERB were accused of preparing to manipulate the elections after 400,000 excess ballots were found in a printing house in the town of Kostinbrod, near Sofia a day ahead of the elections. The chief secretary of the then caretaker government was charged with failing to exercise control on the election logistics but the charges were not proven and he was acquitted. GERB blamed its political opponents for fabricating the scandal in order to undermine its performance in the elections.
According to Bozhanov, MRF-New Beginning were trying to push for a return to paper-only voting, but he insisted that would not happen. He also warned against attempts to compromise the elections through manipulative tactics.
Earlier on Tuesday, the serial numbers of 10 voting machines to be certified for compliance ahead of the early parliamentary elections were randomly drawn at the Electronic Governance Ministry. Speaking at the event, Anastassov said the procedure had nothing to do with the ways in which voting machines could be manipulated, adding that MRF-New Beginning would reveal such issues before the elections. He also said the party would notify all organizations monitoring the elections.
Caretaker Electronic Governance Minister Georgi Sharkov responded to Anastassov by saying that he had assumed the post for a reason and had been appointed to ensure the security and reliability of the machines’ computing resources.
