Balgarianovinite.com Deputy Prime Minister Ivo Hristov said that the deployment of US tanker aircraft at Bezmer Air Base was a decision that everyone, including critics of Progressive Bulgaria, would have made, speaking on Bulgarian National Television on Thursday. “No one would leave Bulgaria without fuel supplies. This means that within days or weeks the government would have to leave office, and we would face a crisis and unrest,” he said.
Asked whether he linked the decision regarding the aircraft to fuel supplies and Lukoil, Hristov replied: “Of course, because the issue of [US] sanctions hangs over Lukoil.”
The Deputy Prime Minister also said that there is a bilateral agreement that Bulgaria cannot refuse to implement, because doing so would mean the country would cease to be a predictable partner. “If you are not a predictable country, you lose international credibility and fall out of all kinds of arrangements. We must be able to rely on our allies, just as they must be able to rely on us,” Hristov added.
On July 22, Bulgaria’s National Assembly authorized the deployment in Bulgaria of up to eight KC-135 military aircraft of the US Armed Forces, together with their crews, up to 250 military personnel carrying personal weapons and ammunition, and airport support equipment. The aircraft will provide support for US operations in the Middle East and will be stationed at Bezmer Air Base from July 24 to October 1. The proposal was submitted by the Council of Ministers. Asked whether the decision to deploy the US aircraft had been made under pressure from the United States, on July 27 Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said Bulgaria made its own sovereign decisions under Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s government.
