Balgarianovinite.com Desislava Petrova, Deputy Sofia City Prosecutor at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, has been nominated for election to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) from the prosecutors’ quota, the SJC said in a press release on Friday.
She was nominated by magistrates from the Supreme Cassation Prosecution Office, the Sofia Appellate Prosecution Office, the Sofia City Prosecution Office, the Sofia District Prosecution Office, the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office and other regional prosecution offices. The nominators said Petrova’s extensive professional experience gives her a comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing the judiciary. They also highlighted her ability as a manager to support colleagues and foster an atmosphere of tolerance and respect.
Petrova has more than 19 years of legal experience, all of it within the prosecution service. She began her career as a junior prosecutor at the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office in 2007 and, following a competitive selection procedure, became a prosecutor at the Sofia City Prosecution Office in 2017. She was appointed its spokesperson in 2021 and has served as Deputy Sofia City Prosecutor since 2022, overseeing its Economic Crimes Department.
Her professional experience includes criminal, economic, tax and anti-corruption cases, including complex cases of significant public interest that resulted in final convictions.
Since April 2025, Petrova has been Deputy Chair of the Association of Prosecutors in Bulgaria and represents it on the SJC’s Civil Council. She was a permanent lecturer at the National Institute of Justice between 2015 and 2020. She has received six awards and commendations by Bulgaria’s prosecutors general, the National Institute of Justice’s Golden Themis badge, and was named Prosecutor of the Year at the 2021 National Justice Awards.
In 2025, Petrova defended a doctoral dissertation and obtained a PhD in Criminal Procedure. She also holds a master’s degree in National Security Protection from the Interior Ministry Academy, obtained in 2020. She is the author of a monograph on judicial investigation in criminal proceedings and 17 academic publications in the fields of criminal procedure and security.
