Balgarianovinite.com A discussion in Veliko Tarnovo Wednesday revisited the importance of Pencho Slaveykov to Bulgarian literature and his broader cultural legacy. The event was held at the Bulgarian News Agency’s National Press Club as part of a BTA initiative marking the poet’s 160th birth anniversary.
The discussion was moderated by the poet, literary scholar and critic, Assoc. Prof. Yordan Eftimov, who highlighted the conceptual nature of Slaveykov’s books and called for a reappraisal of the way authors are presented in school curricula.
Prof. Nikolay Dimitrov, a lecturer and literary historian, said many aesthetic cliches had developed around Slaveykov over the years and should either be challenged or, at the very least, honed.
Prof. Violeta Ruseva, who teaches literature and historical poetics, described Slaveykov as “a builder of culture”. She spoke about his books, his rich biography, the important positions he held, as well as his translations and essays.
Teacher Valentina Dyankova said she hoped that she and her colleagues would succeed in conveying the broader idea that Pencho Slaveykov marked the beginning of Bulgarian modernity, opening Bulgarian literature to fresh European influences and leading European literary models.
Mariana Burova, Director of the Petko R. Slaveykov Regional Library of Veliko Tarnovo, and Deputy Director Ivan Alexandrov announced the launch of a campaign dedicated to the 200th birth anniversary of poet, educator and public figure Petko R. Slaveykov, Pencho Slaveykov’s father. They invited participants to take part in the 25th National Academic Conference with international participation titled “Libraries – Reading – Communications”, whose focus this year will be on illustration in literature. It will be held in Veliko Tarnovo on November 11 and 12.
The Pencho Slaveykov Today initiative is to be held at all 33 BTA national press clubs in Bulgaria. The first discussion, dedicated to the poet’s 160th birth anniversary, took place in his hometown of Tryavna (Central Bulgaria) on April 27. Similar events have since been held in Samokov, Kazanlak, Stara Zagora, Kyustendil, Pernik, Haskovo, Kardzhali, Pazardzhik and Gabrovo.
The December 2026 issue of BTA’s LIK magazine will be dedicated to Pencho Slaveykov. In addition to reports from the discussions, the issue will include specially written texts of 160 words each by 160 people, marking the poet’s 160th birth anniversary.
