A Republican congressman let loose on President Donald Trump Saturday for what he labeled “disgusting” capitulation to Vladimir Putin.
In a series of posts to X, Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) slammed the president’s comments calling for Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky to be replaced.
“I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal because he could have made many deals and for some reason he never does,” Trump said Saturday outside the White House. “And let me go a step further. If I were president, you wouldn’t have ever had that war. That war would have never started. There was no reason that that war with Ukraine and Russia started. It started due to incompetence. It should have never started. You wouldn’t have lost 30% of your country already. You’ve lost 30% of your country and you’ve had over a million people killed… That’s a war that should have never started and I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.
Bacon was incensed.
“We need a President who is up to the task of leading the Free World,” the Nebraska Republican wrote on X.

The congressman added, “Let’s be honest. Trump is and always has been weak on Putin.”

Bacon went on to respond to users who asked him for further thoughts.
“It’s disgusting,” Bacon said.

Like many Republican members of the 119th Congress who have been critical of Trump, Bacon will not be around for the 120th Congress. The Nebraska representative announced his retirement last June — as he likely would have found himself facing a strong primary challenge from a Trump-backed opponent.
But Bacon is now calling out Trump’s waning popularity in recent surveys.
“It must really hurt seeing polls showing Americans have higher favorables towards Zelenskyy than they have Trump,” Bacon wrote — in response to a Trump fan on X who called out the fact that Bacon is leaving Congress. “You should honestly ask yourself why.”
