Balgarianovinite.com The Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party, a member of the Democratic Bulgaria alliance, stated on Sunday that the first steps taken by the new government are exposing the country to financial, economic and strategic risks.
The government of Prime Minister Rumen Radev, in office since May 8, “is increasingly displaying the characteristics of command-style governance and the belief that the state should be run through subordination rather than through a balance of democratic institutions,” the DSB Executive Council said in a resolution made available to BTA.
“Rumen Radev’s one-man rule is showing signs of drifting towards left-wing populism, maintaining an inefficient public administration and inflated public spending. The policy of previous governments of increasing staffing levels and salaries within the state’s security apparatus is continuing. These trends point to the risk of consolidating power with an authoritarian inclination and a backward-looking approach. Of serious concern is also the tendency towards isolation from Europe’s common policies,” the party said.
According to the statement, preventing these dangerous trends requires a strong right-wing opposition with a clear vision for the future of the nation, the economic prospects available to citizens and national security guaranteed by Bulgaria’s EU membership and participation in NATO.
The DSB has set itself the goal of being at the core of such a right-wing alternative. “To achieve this, the party should broaden its ideological platform and public communication, while strengthening and developing the unity of the successful political alliance Democratic Bulgaria on the basis of equality and preserving the organizational and legal autonomy of the participating organizations.”
“Our most important immediate task is the successful consolidation of Bulgaria’s democrats behind a single candidate for the next presidential election, with broad political and public support,” the DSB said.
“Such a candidacy should unite the democratic community around the cause of a European Bulgaria governed by the rule of law. Its objective should be to win the presidential election and ensure constitutional balance and safeguards against abuse of power, institutional overreach and ill-considered political decisions. The victory of the democratic candidate for president is a key condition for protecting Bulgaria’s parliamentary democracy, European orientation and national security,” the DSB added.
On December 1, 2025, the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria coalition and the Forum for Democratic Action signed an agreement to nominate a single candidate for the autumn 2026 presidential election.
