Balgarianovinite.com The government has found a solution to the crisis over mandatory motor third-party liability insurance, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Alexander Poulev told Bulgarian National Television on Saturday. The measure involves a temporary state guarantee mechanism aimed at stabilizing the market and easing price pressure on consumers.
Poulev said the state was also acting against unfair commercial practices and speculative pressure on food and fuel prices. Legislative amendments have been prepared to regulate 33 unfair commercial practices, giving institutions and regulators tools to hold rogue market players to account.
Poulev said the government would take further decisive steps to address structural deficits inherited from recent years. He said that on the cabinet’s first day in office, he ordered all payments by structures and agencies under the Ministry of Economy, Investments and Industry to be halted in order to stop questionable practices and disbursements.
“There were time bombs in every structure: deferred payments under public procurement contracts, advance payments, indexation of advance payments and various schemes that had to be stopped,” Poulev said. He said a practice involving about EUR 68 million at Montazhi EAD, one of the companies in the economy sector, had also been halted. The money had been earmarked for indexation payments for a dam-related service that had not been provided.
Poulev said the measures had prevented the spending of funds that can now be redirected to support citizens.
He said “very serious action” would follow in the coming days, as a preliminary analysis of the Ministry’s structures had already been completed. Poulev added that he would publicly present data on corrupt practices in structures of the Ministry of Economy, Investments and Industry in recent years.
“The facts are scandalous, and we have the strength, expertise and goodwill needed to seek accountability for all these abuses,” Poulev said. He said the cabinet would also take unpopular measures to stabilize public finances and restore trust in institutions. He identified low purchasing power and continuing price imbalances in staple goods and fuels as the main problems facing citizens.
Speaking about the floods, Poulev said: “The state is the people. At this difficult moment, we are mobilizing all resources to help those affected.” He added that a crisis task force had been set up under the Prime Minister, with the participation of ministers, and that institutions were working in coordination to handle the situation.
Poulev also pointed to positive news following the visit to Brussels by a delegation led by Prime Minister Rumen Radev: the recovery of EUR 375 million under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, progress on judicial reforms and stronger trust from European partners.
“Bulgaria’s interest does not contradict European priorities. We have strong political will for reforms and for transforming the economy towards a high value-added model,” Poulev said in response to a question about recent meetings with German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Council President Antonio Costa.
