Balgarianovinite.com Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople delivered a message of peace from the podium of the Hellenic Parliament during his visit to Athens, Kathimerini reported on Tuesday.
In an address to Greek lawmakers, his first in more than two decades, he focused on the ongoing wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, warning that “the contemporary version of so-called Realpolitik has completely displaced international law”.
He stressed that peace has never been a self-evident state in human history but has always been achieved through courageous and selfless initiatives, through the rejection of violence as a means of resolving differences, and through persistent efforts to uphold justice and human dignity.
Bartholomew also acknowledged that religions are often criticized for sometimes fuelling fanaticism and violence instead of promoting peace. He argued that peace among nations and civilizations is impossible without peace among religions, calling for active interfaith cooperation and support for all peaceful initiatives.
