The “Mount Athos in Sofia” exhibition of paintings and photographs, which opened on Monday as part of the autumn Salon of the Arts at the National Palace of Culture (NDK), will be officially inaugurated on October 17 in the presence of Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the Sofia Metropolis said on Wednesday.
In July, the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church said it invited Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to take part in celebrations from October 16 to 20 marking the 1,150th anniversary of the birth and the 1,080th anniversary of the Dormition of St John of Rila the Miracle Worker, the heavenly patron and protector of the Bulgarian people.
“Mount Athos in Sofia” brings together 50 paintings depicting Mount Athos by Greek artist Makis Warlamis (1942–2016) and photographs of monks from the collection of the Mount Athos Photo Library.
Warlamis was born in Veria, northern Greece. He studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and lived and worked in Austria for more than 50 years. His paintings and exhibitions have been presented in Vienna, Hamburg, Paris, Frankfurt, Athens, Brussels, Basel, New York, Tokyo, Kuwait and elsewhere.
The Sofia exhibition is organized by the Sofia Metropolis and the NDK under the patronage of Patriarch Daniil and the Embassy of Greece in Sofia, with the support of the Greek Foreign Ministry. Co-organizers include the Experimental Laboratory in Vergina, Greece, the Mount Athos Photo Library and the Kunstmuseum Waldviertel, a museum founded by Warlamis in Lower Austria that presents a comprehensive collection of his work.
The collection has previously been shown at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens, the Basilica of Saint Mark in Heraklion, Crete, and the Cultural Center of Ierissos in the Municipality of Aristotle. It has also been exhibited in Austria. In 2013, the collection was presented at the European Parliament in Brussels.
