Balgarianovinite.com Electra Airways will expand its fleet with three new aircraft in 2026 and plans to reach 15 aircraft in active operation, the company’s Chief Executive Officer Stefan Trifonov said on Tuesday during a press conference in Sofia presenting an analysis of the aviation market’s development in 2025 and the current challenges facing the sector.
Trifonov said the company is following its development plan and is not being affected by military conflicts or geopolitical tensions. He added that during the summer season, Electra Airways will operate only one aircraft to Germany, which will be based in Burgas.
As part of its strategic development, he announced that the company has signed an agreement with Armenian tour operators to operate 15 flights from Burgas to Yerevan. The idea is for the route to be served initially during the summer season, with the ambition of making it year-round later.
He added that the company’s strategy focuses on using middle-life aircraft, around 15 years old, which undergo in-house technical maintenance and life-extension procedures.
According to Trifonov, Bulgaria does not have enough passengers to support the launch of new regular routes, which significantly limits opportunities for domestic market development. This puts airlines in a position where they mainly have to seek international markets and partnerships.
He also noted that most Bulgarian airlines have visibly withdrawn from the charter market. As a reason, he pointed to strong competition from low-cost carriers such as Wizz Air and Ryanair. In his view, Bulgaria is not a sufficiently favourable destination for charter operations from a cost perspective, which further reduces the profitability of such flights for local carriers.
Trifonov said that a serious problem remains the shortage of personnel, especially engineering and technical staff, whose training takes considerably longer than that of pilots. The company is developing its own cadet programme and internal training system, with some staff being trained starting immediately after secondary education.
